You guys. I went and made up a new word.
Yes. Yes, I did. Forgive me, librarians of the world. I promise it will be okay.
It had to be done. What else do you call a library that rocks at using social media? A mashup seemed to be in order.
Social + Library = socialbrary. (#socialbrary if you feel like living on the edge.)
A socialbrary is a library that gets it. Socialbraries (Gasp! I’m even using a plural form of the word.) are libraries that understand the power of social media and how to harness it effectively.
Social media isn’t going anywhere. It’s only growing. And it continues to become more and more a part of our lives. Social media can play a role in taking library service to the next level. It can keep our customers engaged and help make sure libraries don’t one day just disappear.
There’s a lot of noise out there about social media marketing. Cutting through it to find the best advice can be a chore. Finding tips specifically for libraries is even more difficult. And let’s face it. Libraries are unique beasts. (Friendly, cuddly, wonderful beasts. But beasts, nonetheless.) The social media marketing tips for big corporate companies may not always apply to your library branch or system. The same even goes for the advice out there for nonprofits and small businesses. Libraries are simply on a shelf of their own. (See what I did there?)
This blog is meant to serve a need. The goal is clear: Provide social media marketing tips for public libraries. I was inspired by my manager, Angela Hursh, who writes a great blog about content marketing for libraries. (Definitely check it out!) Together, we can up our game on social media and serve our customers better. Get ready to become a socialbrary!
In the meantime, tell me about yourself. First — take my poll. Then feel free to tell me more about yourself in the comments below. What kind of challenges do you face when it comes to using social media at your library? How many social media platforms are you using? What do you like best? Are you solely responsible for managing the accounts? What part of social media marketing are you most interested in learning more about? I look forward to hearing from you – and creating a world full of socialbaries!
